Tips on engaging family & friends about racial justice
1. Check in with yourself
Are you ready to commit to allyship and action?
Are you tired/ overwhelmed/ stressed/ numb?
It's okay if you are, as long as you feel strong enough to create space for others
Are you informed, well-prepared to discuss race with your friends/ colleagues/ family?
2. Check in with them
Is your relationship with this person/ group of people strong enough that they trust you? If not, what are the barriers to gaining that trust?
Ask: "What do you know? What have you seen? How are you feeling?"
Observe: any changes in mood or behavior
3. Create a space for inclusive dialogue
In dialogue, we play the role of being teachers/ facilitators and lifelong learners
Practice humility, openness, and restraint
Listen deeply and intentionally
Call in, don't call out
4. Never lose sight of equity and justice
Remind others (and yourself) that BIPOC have endured racism for centuries - continue to share stories of resilience
Don't be afraid to speak up and correct people - and inversely, don't be afraid to accept fault if you are corrected
Be clear, direct, and factual
5. Commit to action
Don't avoid talking about it - racism is not new and the status quo is not addressing it
Protest and activism strengthens sense of community and connection to larger anti-racism and other social justice movements
Sense of empowerment and agency when speaking out about injustices
Visions of more equitable future
For White folks: activism is crucial to unlearning and decolonizing our own imbedded anti-Blackness
